Our History...

We are located at Coulter in southwestern Manitoba, 1.5 miles frm the Canadian/US border on Highway #83. Downey Farms was first homesteaded by our family in 1889. Jacquie and I have operated the farm since we married in 1997. Our farming operation consists of 21 quarter sections on which we pasture our Simmental cattle, and grow feed. Our herd consists of about 100 purebred Simmental females and 200 Simmental-influenced commercial females.

Our three children, Ryan, Kyle and Beverley-Jean are the fifth generation of Downeys on our farm. They take a very active role in the cattle and belong to 4-H and the Young Canadian Simmentalers. Jacquie serves as a Director on the Manitoba Simmental Association and we are members of the Keystone Simmental Association.

Our breeding program...

2011 was our first year ever to enter a pen of bulls at Canadian Western Agribition. We were honoured to
win the Bull Pen Alley Show Supreme Champion Pen of Bulls banner with three 2011 bull calves:
  • Downey 102Y, purchased by a Saskatchewan breeder,
  • Downey 103Y (which we kept as a herd bull), and
  • Downey 106Y (above right) the high seller in our 2012 bull sale at $17,000 purchased by a British
    Columbia breeder.

Our marketing program...

This year, we are consigning a mix of 25 registered and commercial females to a bred cow sale at Virden, MB in December 2020, and our Simmental bulls to the Rebels of the West Angus & Simmental Sale each March, at Virden, Manitoba.
